When Vladimir Putin was appointed prime minister of Russia, very little was known about his background. This former Soviet intelligence agent entered politics in the early 1990s and rose rapidly. By August of 1999, ailing President Boris Yeltsin (1931–) appointed him prime minister. When Yeltsin stepped down in December of 1999, Putin became the acting president of Russia, and he was elected president to serve a full term on March 26, 2000.

Early life and education

Vladimir Putin was born on October 1, 1952, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia. An only child, his father was a foreman in a metal factory and his mother was a homemaker. Putin lived with his parents in an apartment with two other families. Though religion was not permitted in the Soviet Union, the former country which was made up of Russia and other smaller states, his mother secretly had him baptized as an Orthodox Christian.

Biografi SBY, Susilo Bangbang Yudoyono

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono adalah presiden RI ke-6. Berbeda dengan presiden sebelumnya, beliau merupakan presiden pertama yang dipilih secara langsung oleh rakyat dalam proses Pemilu Presiden putaran II 20 September 2004. Lulusan terbaik AKABRI (1973) yang akrab disapa SBY ini lahir di Pacitan, Jawa Timur 9 September 1949. Istrinya bernama Kristiani Herawati, merupakan putri ketiga almarhum Jenderal (Purn) Sarwo Edhi Wibowo.

 

Pensiunan jenderal berbintang empat ini adalah anak tunggal dari pasangan R. Soekotjo dan Sitti Habibah. Darah prajurit menurun dari ayahnya yang pensiun sebagai Letnan Satu. Sementara ibunya, Sitti Habibah, putri salah seorang pendiri Ponpes Tremas. Beliau dikaruniai dua orang putra yakni Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (mengikuti dan menyamai jejak dan prestasi SBY, lulus dari Akmil tahun 2000 dengan meraih penghargaan Bintang Adhi Makayasa) dan Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono (lulusan terbaik SMA Taruna Nusantara, Magelang yang kemudian menekuni ilmu ekonomi).

Biografi Mahatma Gandhi

Hampir semua orang di dunia ini mengenal sosok bernama Mahatma Gandhi. Walaupun beliau tidak pernah mendapatkan nobel perdamaian, namun jasanya untuk perdamaian dunia tidak diragukan lagi. Sifat paling utama dari sosok seorang Mahatma Gandhi adalah, beliau sangat tidak menyukai kekerasan, apapun bentuknya.

Mahatma Gandhi lahir pada tanggal 2 oktober 1869 di salah satu daerah India, Gujarat. Banyak orang di dunia memang lebih mengenal beliau dengan nama Mahatma Gandhi yang dalam bahasa Sansekerta berarti “jiwa agung”, namun nama aslinya adalah Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi dibesarkan di sebuah keluarga yang memiliki pemikiran konservatif. Keluarganya memiliki hubungan dengan penguasa Kathiawad di India.

Beberapa dari mereka bekerja pada pemerintah. Sepanjang hidupnya digunakan untuk menegakkan perdamaian, sayang usaha tersebut harus terhenti pada 30 januari 1948. Pada tanggal tersebut, Mahatma Gandhi menghembuskan nafas terakhirnya di New Delhi, India, akibat pembunuhan oleh seorang hindu fanatik yang menganggap beliau terlalu memihak pada kaum muslim. Peristiwa tersebut hanya berselang dua minggu setelah penandatanganan perjanjian damai oleh pihak tentara Inggris dalam upaya membebaskan India dari belenggu perjajahan Britania Raya. Padahal seperti diketahui banyak orang, beliau adalah sosok pengagum dan sangat menghargai berbagai aliran kepercayaan, baik Islam, Hindu, maupun Kristen.
